Smogathon 2017 Global Edition

In 2017, we once again decided to take things to the next level by organizing the third edition of Smogathon in the form of a truly international contest.

Semi-finals

Smogathon 2017 Global Edition semi-final events took place in five locations around the world: Warsaw (Poland), London (UK), Berkeley (USA), Bangalore (India) and Hong Kong (China).  The projects were evaluated by the interdisciplinary jury members, consisting of professional of scientific, VC, business and administration background.

The lucky 12 went through two days of Questions & Answers sessions hosted by HSBC, a partner of Smogathon 2017 Global Edition. They were questioned intensely by the experts and every solution needed to be proven. Everything took place in 4 rooms with experts in

The Grand Finale

The top six teams passed to the final stage , they got a chance to pitch their ideas in front of 800-1000 people in ICE Krakow Congress Centr. The best air pollution-fighting project in the world got $25,000 in cash. The remaining $75,000 was in the form of a contract for implementing the idea in the city of Krakow.

Artveoli - The winner of Smogathon 2017 Global Edition

The winner of Smogathon 2017 Global Edition was Artveoli, Inc. - a Silicon Valley based start-up company in the Indoor Air Quality space, making artistic air panels that create fresh air indoors.

Smart, connected, modern design flat panels remove excess buildup of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) and convert it into Oxygen (O2), improving indoor air quality in homes, offices, schools, hospitals and other closed environments. People spend over 90% of their lives indoors, and there are multiple indoor air contaminants that make people sick. One such contaminant, CO2, is what people exhale, so it must be removed continuously where people are present, otherwise it causes headaches, dizziness, shortness of breath, tiredness, and loss of cognitive performance. The only way to lower the CO2 indoors has always been to get fresh air from the outside, until now. Artveoli Air Panels disrupt indoor ventilation by generating fresh air indoors, making healthier air inside. The Artveoli founders worked together at Stanford Bioengineering making custom microfluidic devices – the core technology of the Artveoli Air Panels. The technology is based on photosynthesis, the process plants use to convert CO2 to O2.
